Don’t feel silly for asking. This is actually a really common question. How do I place the PM2.5 filter into my cotton face mask. Does it matter which way it goes?
Cotton face masks are a great option for people with eczema and allergies. And if you want to ramp up the protection from inhaled allergens or viruses adding a filter is a great place to start.
So what is a PM2.5 filter anyway?
These disposable mask filters contain 5 layers. The main layer is made of activated charcoal which helps absorb vapours, pollutants and allergens. They can also filter respiratory virus particles such as influenzas and Covid-19. The combination of layers in your filter can trap particles up to 2.5 microns which is why they are called PM2.5 filters.
Does it matter which way the filter goes in my mask?
Because these filters are constructed in a certain order yes it does matter which way it goes into the mask. I know shocking! It’s actually a little-known fact. They way your filter goes into your mask can affect its operation.
When you install the filter into your mask the PM2.5 should face towards you.
So how do I insert the filter into my cotton mask?
On the inside of our cotton masks you will find a white pocket. You can place your fingers through here to make it stand up a little. The slide the PM2.5 filter into this pocket. Remember you want to make sure the words PM2.5 are facing towards you. Not facing outwards.
How often should the filter be replaced?
Some sources state that the filters can be worn for up to a week for casual mask wearing. NSW Health advises that PM2.5 masks should be changed once they become moist.
